Windows 3.x Dialup Configuration

Configuration

Get into the configuration for Internet Explorer. The way you do that is by double clicking on the world globe icon. When it starts to dial click cancel. That will bring up the Connect To window with your Username and Password. Click on the Properties button. The first tab that you will see at the top of this window will be the General tab. There are 5 option check buttons at the bottom of the page. The only 2 that should be checked are the disconnect if idle for more than, and the dial on demand buttons.

The next tab beside the general tab is called the Modems. The most important part of this tab is the speed setting. If you have a 14.4 modem the speed should be set to 19,200, if it is a 28.8 or 33.6 modem it should be set to 38,400. The only exception to that is the 3Com US Robotics modems. They would be set to 115,200.

The third tab is TCP tab. In there, you want to make sure the first option is set to server assigned IP address. The next section below that is the DNS numbers. If there is a box for the domain name, enter SOHO Central. The primary DNS should be 216.98.128.70 , the secondary is 216.98.138.70 then click ok. Once you get back to connect to window click the close button at which time your computer will ask you to save the changes. Click yes.

The next place you will need to go to continue your configuration is the Main icon group. In there you will need to select the Control Panels icon. In the control panels you will select Ports. In ports, you will need to select the correct port then click on Settings. The first box in the window is the Baud Rate. Like before, make sure that the speed is set to match the settings in your dial up properties. (HINT: In windows 3.x, the highest setting for the ports is 19,200. In order to change that to a higher setting you need to highlight that number then click the delete key on your key board. Once you have done that type in the speed that you want to set it to, i.e. 38,400 or whatever speed your modem is supposed to be set to.)

Then the next 3 lines will read as follows 8, none, and 1. The last line will be the Flow Control . We need to make sure that you have that set Hardware. Click ok, then click the close button. You will need to back all the way out of windows to a DOS prompt in order for these changes to take. Once that is done you are ready to get on the internet. You will still have to configure the web browser for the connection, mail, and news settings.  For setting up Internet Mail click here.

Other program problems

Question: Netscape calls a dialer, and then it shows an error message saying can't find a cserve.exe file.

Answer: Find the compressed Netscape file, and store it in a safe location on the hard drive. Then completely delete the Netscape directory.  Open Notepad, and then open the win.ini file. Remove all references to Netscape, and any and all WinCim or CompuServe. Save the file when this is done. Now open the system.ini and do the same thing, saving it when done. Restart your computer by closing Windows and then turning it off for ten seconds and then turning it back on. Reinstall Netscape and reconfigure it (the mail and news settings). Connect and see if it is working!

Question: Netscape will not go anywhere, error reported that says the server has no DNS.

Answer: Make sure you have actually dialed up and made a connection.  If the connection has been established, then you need to make sure that the modem speed has been set correctly. Most 28.8 or 33.6 modems should be set to 38,400 except for 3Com US Robotics which should be set to 115,200.  Next, go to options, then mail and news preferences, then click on the servers tab. SMTP and POP server should be smtp.sohocentralusa.com or smtp.popsite.net (if we host your domain, it should be smtp.<yourdomainame>) and pop.sohocentralusa.com or pop.2cowherd.net (if we host your domain, it should be pop.<yourdomainname>). POP 3 account should be userid. NNTP server should be news.sohocentralusa.com. Beside the server tab you need to click on the identity tab. The first line is your name, the second line should be your email address (userid@sohocentralusa.com or your domain if we host you), the third line which is the reply-to address should be the same as your email address.

Question: It says Unable to initialize the modem error, what do I do?

Answer: Make sure that your modem is set up on the correct port.

Question: You get an error message that says SERVER DOES NOT HAVE A DNS ENTRY.

Answer: There are a couple of things you can check. First, check to make sure that your modem speed is set properly for the brand of modem you are using. Generally, most 28.8 or 33.6 modems can only operate properly with the speed set at 38,400. 3Com US Robotics, is pretty much the only modem that operates at 115,200.  Secondly, check to make sure that you are still connected.
