Windows 95/98 Dialup Configuration

This area is available to help you setup Windows 95/98 for use with SOHO Central Business Class Internet Access. It will walk you through the various configuration screens on your computer. 

Some of these configurations may already be configured on your system as a result of previous Internet connections and/or pre-installed with your system. Please review this information to make sure it is correct.

Setup Windows Networking

Add a Dial-up Adapter

  1. Click the Start button point to Settings and choose Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network icon.
  3. Select the Configuration tab.
  4. Click the Add button.
  5. Select Adapter.
  6. Click the Add button.
  7. From the Manufacturers: list, choose Microsoft.
  8. From the Network Adapters: list, choose Dial-up Adapter.
  9. Click the OK button.

Add TCP/IP

  1. Click the Add button.
  2. Select Protocol.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. From the Manufacturers: list, choose Microsoft.
  5. From the Network Protocol: list, choose TCP/IP.
  6. Click the OK button.

Add Client for Microsoft Networks

  1. Click the Add button.
  2. Select Client.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. From the Manufacturers: list, select Microsoft.
  5. From the Network Clients: list, select Client for Microsoft Networks.
  6. Click the OK button.

You should now only have three things listed: Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, Dial-up Adapter.  If you see anything else listed, and you don't know what they are, click one on them and then click the Remove button.  Or if your are on a network, ask your network administrator what components are necessary.

Configure TCP/IP

  1. Choose the Configuration tab.
  2. Under The following network components are installed:, choose TCP/IP.
  3. Click the Properties button.
  4. Choose the IP Address tab.
  5. Select the Obtain an IP address automatically button.
  6. Choose the DNS Configuration tab.
  7. Select Disable DNS.
  8. Choose the WINS Configuration tab.
  9. Select Disable WINS Resolution.
  10. Choose the Gateway tab.
  11. Clear the Installed Gateways text box.
  12. Click the OK button.

Once everything is correct click OK. When asked to restart your computer click the Yes button and wait for your computer to restart.


 

Install Dial-Up Networking

  1. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
  2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  5. Click the Communications component.
  6. Click the Details... button.
  7. Put a check in the box next to Dial-Up Networking.
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Click the OK button again.
  10. Windows will prompt you for your installation diskettes or CD.
  11. Wait for Dial-Up Networking to install.
  12. When you are told to restart, click the OK button.
  13. Click the Start button and choose Shut Down.
  14. Select Restart the computer?
  15. Click the Yes button.
  16. Wait for Windows to restart.

This may take a few minutes.


 

Setup Dial-Up Networking

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.


     
  3. Now double click on the Make New Connection icon.


     
  4. Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, type SOHO Central.


     
  5. Click the Configure button.
  6. Check that the appropriate speed for your modem is highlighted (for 14.4 modems use 19200, for 28.8 and 33.6 modems use 38400 and for 56K modems use 57600.)
  7. Make sure that Only connect at this speed is not checked.
  8. Click the OK button.


     
  9. Click the Next button.
  10. In the Area code and Telephone number text boxes, type your local SOHO Central access number. Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the number you choose is a local toll-free call.
  11. Click the Next button.


     
  12. Click the Finish button.


     
  13. Click on the SOHO Central icon in Dialup Networking with the right mouse button.
  14. Choose Properties.  You may also left click once on the icon and go to the File menu and select Properties.


     
  15. Click on Server Types tab (on some older versions of Windows this will be a button located to the right of the Configure button)


     
  16. For Type of Dial-Up Server, select PPP: Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
  17. Make sure that the only boxes with a check marks are TCP/IP, and Enable software compression.
  18. Click the TCP/IP Settings button.


     
  19. Select the Server assigned IP address button.
  20. Select the Specify name server addresses button.
  21. In the Primary DNS text box, type 216.98.128.70
  22. In the Secondary DNS text box, type 216.98.138.70
  23. Make sure that there is a check beside both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.


     
  24. Click the OK button about 4 times to get back to the Dial-up Networking window.


     
  25. Drag the SOHO CENTRAL connection icon to your desktop.
  26. When you see a message saying You cannot move or copy this item to this location. Do you want to create a shortcut to the item instead?, click the Yes button.

Your computer is now configured to connect to the Internet.
